Obama Rosh Hashana and Peace
Obama, Rosh Hashana, and Peace
by Jerry Waxman
Thank you for your wishes, Mr. President. I think there is an error in your thinking, though. While we have always prayed for peace, we have never seen peace as something that depends on others accepting us. While it would be nice for people to accept us, knowing that they often don’t, we have generally been happy if they would just leave us alone.

So, on Rosh Hashana 5770, we pray for peace again. And we also have to look at the facts of life. Israel’s enemies are committed to Israel’s destruction. That’s a fact of life, and it will not go away soon. So we cannot afford to labor under any fantasies that our enemies will ever accept Israel. Our best hope is that they will leave Israel alone so that we may live in peace.
Thank you again for your message and your wishes for a prosperous year. We pray also for you and your administration that you will succeed as president of the U.S. and you will come to realize the truth about Israel and will support our efforts for peace.
