"Why the Andaman Haggadah?"

There is no commandment to read a Haggadah. The commandment for the Passover seder is to "tell your children."

Every year at this time, we tell the amazing story of the Exodus. Not only do we talk about the terrible slavery of the Israelites. Not only do we recount the terrifying ten plagues. Not only do we just talk about the massive rush to freedom -- we act it out! The seder is so organized so that we experience our own history by eating or drinking different items while recounting the story of our ancestors.

ZaraMart

We use different foods and drink on the seder table as props. And with just a little imagination, we find ourselves at the very first Passover seder. This way we always remember.

The problem with most haggadot is they don't speak our language. For English speakers with a limited knowledge of Hebrew, the Pesach seder is often a monotonous series of readings and rituals. That is not how it is supposed to be at all. It is supposed to be one of the most lively affairs you attend every year.

We need to tell the story in a language we understand. Many if not most Jews use the Hebrew prayers and blessings that have been brought down through the ages. This is preserved in the Andaman Haggadah. However to tell the story of the most dramatic event in the history of civilization - even the great rabbis of the Second Temple era used their vernacular. And so should we.

There are many other English haggadot. Most of the ones you find on the internet either stray from tradition completely, or they're boring - or both.

So I began to make a haggadah in English, based on a Hebrew haggadah that is used in Israel. And it quickly dawned on me, "Everyone needs a haggadah like this."

It's for you -- and your family, and your neighbors, and their neighbors. It's for all English speakers who deserve the intense joy that the Passover seder brings when you do it right.. Most important, it's for the children who are curious and have some questions to ask.

Whether we celebrate in Israel or in America or England or Australia or on an island in the Andaman Sea, we all deserve the great and intense joy that the Passover seder brings. Let The Andaman Haggadah be your guide. And may you and yours have the most fulfilling and happiest of holidays ever.

Thank you for coming here! This downloadable Haggadah is priced to be affordable to everyone. In fact you name your own price. The quality is every bit as high as higher-priced haggadot!

Above all, have a most enjoyable, meaningful, and memorable holiday!! Pesach Kasher v'Sameach!

Open Letter To President Barack Obama in the Wake of His Address in Cairo on 4 June 2009

by Jerry Waxman

To the Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States of America

Dear Mr. President:

I'm writing to you from Sderot, where I live. You visited this town last year. In your speech in Cairo you referred indirectly to Sderot's unique disposition in the tragedy of "the roadmap." On the one hand I want to thank you - for speaking directly to the terrorists in front of a world audience, telling them that violence does them no good. On the other hand I want to tell you that you've let me down. You've let down the people of Sderot, where you talked about our right to defend ourselves.

Your solutions to the problems which concern Israel are not solutions at all. They will not lead to a lasting peace. Logic, pragmatism, and lessons from history tell us so. I support your vision of a world at peace and harmony, and I respectfully have to tell you that the policy you have outlined does not represent change. It is the same as the policies of the two administrations before you. This does not lead to peace.
Mr. President, I want to tell you that I came to Sderot less than a year ago. I left a job and a pretty good and safe life to live here. I know of others who have come from different countries and different walks of life with similar stories. They left secure, comfortable lives to live in Israel. And although many of us here have nothing now - no jobs, no security, no homes, nothing - we are determined to stay in Israel - in Sderot and in every town, city, and village in the land of Israel. We are fulfilling an age old dream of our ancestors and ourselves to live in this land.
I don't believe there is another people or nation on earth that has a dream like this. I don't believe there is one man or woman amongst the thousands of Palestinian refugees who would come to live in this land if they had more secure options elsewhere. Those who have shot rockets into Sderot have no claims to this town. They don't want to live here. A plan to carve out a piece of territory for people who really don't dream of living there is not a plan that will succeed, Mr. Obama.
When you spoke at the university in Cairo, people applauded your comments when you spoke of restoring dignity to the Palestinian people. I wholeheartedly agree that the Palestinian people deserve to have the same freedoms and opportunities as all people deserve. But then when you admonished the extremists for shooting rockets into Jewish homes, there was no applause.
How do you explain that, Mr. Obama? How do you explain that the one thing the Muslim world could do to shake off the stigmas and the stereotypes - to collectively and vocally denounce the few terrorists among them - they won't do it?
Neither did your comments about recognizing Israel draw applause from your Cairo audience, even though Egypt's Anwar Sadat was the first leader of a major Muslim country to risk his life, and lose it, by reaching out to Israel.
What does that tell you, Mr. Obama? If Egyptians show no pride in their country's historical peace agreement with Israel, can you expect other Arab and predominantly Muslim countries to open their skies to Israeli planes, and open their ports to Israeli goods, and open their minds to treating Jewish people with the same dignity and respect as all people deserve?
There is no connection to Jewish settlements, Mr. Obama. Jews have lived in Hebron and Gush Etzion long before there were ever Palestinian refugees. If there are Palestinians who dream of living in the territories of Judea and Samaria, there should be no reason they couldn't live there in peace with the Jewish settlers. Your call to Israel to stop Jewish settlements to form a separate state for Palestinians is not a call for peace. It is a plan that has failed, and can only fail again. There is no chance that it will lead to peace and prosperity for anyone, Muslim, Christian, or Jew.
That the Palestinian people have suffered there is no argument. That the Palestinian people deserve to have better lives, I totally agree. That much of their suffering began at the time that Jews declared Israel a state there is no denial of the correlation. But to suggest that Israel is the main cause of their suffering is to deny facts, and ignore truth. And to suggest a separate state for Palestinians is not a logical conclusion at all. As a peaceful solution to a problem, it doesn't merit consideration if only because it is not something the Palestinian people have ever struggled for or shown an interest in.
While the comparisons are not exactly warranted, Mr. President, please consider the oppressed minorities in the United States. The African Americans don't have a separate state within U.S. borders. The Latin Americans have not demanded a separate state. Nor have the Asian Americans. What would be the policy of the United States were the Muslim Americans to make demands for a separate state within the borders of the U.S.?
Mr. Obama, I do not join those Israelis who would respond to your speech with sarcasm or mockery. I do not join the Jewish activists who would use anger and invective against you as a way to thwart your goals. I am an American who supports you in your efforts to do what is in America's best interests. I am a friend who wants you to avoid doing things that are not in America's best interests and not in your best interests.
The "roadmap" is such a thing. I had hopes, in my support for you as a world leader, that you would see that the roadmap does not provide a pragmatic solution to any legitimate concerns of anybody who lives in the region. I had hopes that you would be more imaginative and act with more intelligence than your predecessor on these issues. I had very high hopes that you would act as a true leader and speak the real truth, though it may fly in the face of what other leaders have said, and put this roadmap aside to work out more desirable, more feasible, and more attainable goals in cooperation with affected parties in the region.

Until now, you have let me down. And while nobody may see it yet, you have let America down. Please consider these things that I have written, Mr. Obama, and be the true leader that Americans voted for. Distance yourself from failed agendas including the roadmap, and rely more on truth.

Respectfully,

Jerry Waxman

Of Holidays and Heroes – Will the Red Sea Part Again?

by Jerry Waxman

Friday, 7:00 AM, Beit Haggai near Hevron:  In the early morning hours, a young Arab man came into the town. Armed with a knife and firearm, the first persons he met were two residents on the First Response team. There was a struggle, one of the first response members was wounded slightly.  The Arab infiltrator was eliminated.

Recalling the incident of two weeks ago in Bat Ayin, when an Arab killed a 13 year old boy with an axe, a spokesperson for the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) praised the actions of the first response team.  Civilians, not the military, saved their town from tragedy.

Two days ago was a holiday in Israel, the last day of the Passover festival, the anniversary of the parting of the Red Sea.

If you recall, some 3300 years ago, the Israelites left Egypt. Pharoah called upon the whole Egyptian army to chase the Israelites.  The Jews could not turn south for there were wild animals.  They could not turn north for the Phillistines were ready to pounce on them.  In back of them were the Egyptians with their chariots and horses.  And in front of them was the water.

If there was ever a time when the nation of Israel could see the world closing in on them, it was then and there at the edge of the Red Sea. The world would close in on the nation of Israel many more times in the next 3300 years.

Somehow the Jewish people always survived.  And first response teams have always helped.

America’s got a new hero!  Captain Richard Phillips of the Maersk Alabama put his life on the line to save his crew.  He deserves praise not only for his bravery, but also for setting an example for everyone – particularly leaders of companies, leaders of cities, and leaders of countries. Until now we have seen too much of so-called leaders sacrificing the people under them for their own gain. Captain Phillips has turned it around.

And we should thank President Obama for taking swift action in authorizing the Navy to intervene in order to protect American citizens.  He has set a precedent for his administration.

Sometimes Israel uses its military to protect its citizens.  When it does, Israel gets criticized all over the world.  In Sderot, where we’ve seen the rockets’ red glare, and the news of the protests against us, we can feel the world closing in.

We’ve had our heroes, too. In the second Lebanon War, Major Roi Klein saved his soldiers by jumping on a grenade. (See video on this page.). Not long after, his bereaved family received an eviction notice.  Their home is on land that the Arabs want.

We have another hero who was a commander of a bold rescue operation.  33 years ago, Yonatan Netanyahu, older brother of today’s prime minister, led Operation Thunderbolt. They stormed Entebbe airport in Uganda and brought more than 100 hostages to safety.

Yonatan was killed. A collection of his letters were put in a book (“Michtavei Yoni” The English version is here. ) The book gives us a glimpse into a hero’s mind. And it shows us that 33 years ago and more, there were real concerns about preserving a Jewish state in Israel.  Then, as now, we needed first response teams to prevent the world from closing in too fast.

It’s been quiet in Sderot.  And sunny. And the people seem to have confidence enough to let their kids play outside. We know the weapons have been flowing into Gaza since January.  And we know that some people in Gaza are anxious to use them.  But what the heck, it’s quiet now….

A couple kassams were launched into open fields, supposedly to welcome the arrival of U.S. envoy George Mitchell.  Rather than respond to such activities, he spoke to Israel’s leaders about the creation of an Arab state in the West Bank, led by the Palestinian Authority, side by side with Israel living in peace.

Binyamin Netanyahu posed a correct question: He said that Israel would be willing to talk about a Palestinian state, so long as the P.A. recognizes Israel as a Jewish state.

Mahmoud Abbas went ballistic.  A Jewish state?!  Never!

Can we expect the U.S. and the European Union and the Quartet and the Arab League to put pressure on the Palestinian Authority to recognize the Jewish state?  Or is it more likely that Israel will be criticized for making impossible demands?

Durban II gets underway next week.  This is the U.N. sponsored conference on Human Rights and Anti-Racism to take place in Durban, South Africa..  At the head of the conference-Libya. Vice Chair-Iran. Rappoteur-Cuba.

The U.S. has yet to say whether or not it will be represented at the conference.  Durban I, in 2001, turned into an Israel-bashing frenzy.  Secretary of State Colin Powell walked out.  This year some countries, including Canada, are boycotting the conference.   Why is the U.S. vascillating on this?

Israel Defense forces have just determined that everybody in Israel is within missile range either from Gaza or from Lebanon.  Everybody.

So, here we are again. The Arabs have Gaza, we’re supposed to give them the West Bank.  So where are we supposed to go when the missiles start flying.  Can’t go north. The missiles are there.  Can’t go west; Gaza’s got that covered. Can’t go east, the P.A. will make sure of that.  Our best bet – south, to Eilat, back to the Red Sea.

We can’t expect the sea to part again.  What we need are first responders to prevent  tragedy and injustice..  You see, today we don’t have heroes like Richard Phillips, or Roi Klein, or Yonatan Netanyahu in leadership positions. We really cannot expect much from today’s heads of state without proper advice from us.

Here is what our first responders should do:  They should talk with Obama and Clinton and George Mitchell. And show them a map of the Jewish homeland as described by the Balfour Declaration.  And show them that most of that land has already been partitioned and given to Arab leaders.  And show them how the Arabs have used Gaza since Israel evacuated 10,000 Jews.  And ask what are we to expect if we evacuate 100,000 Jews from Judea and Samaria.

First responders need to ask some very pointed quesions.

1. If we are talking about human rights, why haven’t the Arabs sent Gilad Shallit home?
2. If we are talking aboutg human rightrs and civil rights, why doesn’t the U.S., release Johnathan Pollard.?
3. And finally, as you look over all the land we’re supposed to give to the Arabs:  IF we’re talking of  peace,  Why Can’t Jews Live There?
